Leaving behind the remains of the wreck

Este libro de Víctor Manuel González Esparza, ya dado a conocer anteriormente en español bajo el sello editorial de la Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes durante el año 2016 y bajo el título Dejando los restos del naufragio. Fragmentos para una historia cultural, se presenta ahora traducido al inglés por Martha Julieta Ramírez Campos, con la misma compilación de ensayos del autor, conformada por los trabajos ya publicados: "Dejando los restos del naufragio. Fragmentos para una historia cultural"; “Las caritas sonrientes o los duendecillos del éxtasis”; "El Códice Osuna o La pintura del gobernador"; "La Exposición de Arte Popular o del surgimiento de la vanguardia, México, 1921"; "¿Hacia un nuevo mapa cultural?"; y los textos de reciente creación: "Entre ‘cultura y civilización’"; "Posada y las vanguardias"; y "Dos divertimentos". En su epílogo, agregado a esta edición con respecto de la anterior, González Esparza indica que:

"In the case of this book that collects some of my essays, it is the reader who finally recreates what I present here, starting from a new history of art that avoids the great authors or the general styles and finds in the search between the popular and the fine arts different ways of seeing. Hence the idea of Lucien Febvre that gives this book its title, “leave behind the remains of the wreck” to find new ways to help us rethink our own history of art. So, it seems to me that in the fragments that make up these essays I have been able to find clues to walk on paths without feeling confusion or despair, without feeling the burden that represents our past (again Febvre) which does not allow us to move towards other ways to explore and understand history".
