La escritura espiritual es un tópico tan antiguo y universal como la misma experiencia que es su razón de ser. Su manifestación puede rastrearse en distintas narrativas. En el cristianismo, la escritura espiritual ha generado debates sobre su legitimidad para hablar de Dios. Las vidas de jesuitas ejemplares siguieron el programa humanista animado por la ratio studiorum de 1599 en el que la pedagogía se dirigía a formar en las virtudes que, a fin de cuentas, eran el medio para acercarse a una experiencia más profunda de Dios. Desde esta óptica, el relato de las peripecias, las debilidades, los fracasos o las exigencias extremas refuerza el empeño por un continuo “ordenamiento” de afectos o pasiones.
Con esta investigación, el historiador René Millar Carvacho agrega un eslabón más a la larga cadena de estudios ligados a la historia de la espiritualidad de la Compañía de Jesús. De esta manera, René Millar nos ayuda a profundizar en el relativo misterio que aún sigue siendo el universo de las creencias religiosas y la espiritualidad del pasado colonial peruano.

Spiritual writing is a topic as ancient and universal as the very experience, which is its reason of existence. Its manifestation can be traced in different narratives. In Christianity, spiritual writing has generated debates about its legitimacy to speak about God. The lives of exemplary Jesuits followed the humanist program animated by the Ratio Studiorum of 1599 in which pedagogy was aimed at forming individuals in virtues that, after all, were the means to approach to a deeper experience of God. From this point of view, the story of the incidents, weaknesses, failures, or extreme demands reinforces the effort to a continuous “ordering” of affections or passions.
With this research, the historian René Millar Carvacho adds one more link to the long chain of studies connected to the history of the spirituality of the Society of Jesus. In this way, René Millar helps us delve into the relative mystery that, to this day, the universe of religious beliefs and spirituality of the Peruvian colonial past still is.
